Why a Cohesive Home is Important
Why are cohesive homes important? Well, they bring a sense of ease and calm with well-designed spaces. Cohesive areas feel soothing and visually relaxed, and don’t feel overwhelming. In today’s stress-filled lives, anything that helps regulate stress and emotions is valuable.
Plus, for those with investment properties like Airbnbs or mid-term rentals (MTRs), a cohesive home attracts more attention, leading to more bookings and increased revenue.
Cohesive Home Tips
Let’s delve into some tips for achieving a cohesive home.
Tip #1: Consistent Flooring
The first tip I want to share is about consistent flooring. This is particularly important in smaller homes. Having the same flooring throughout your space makes it feel larger and more unified. While certain areas like a foyer or mudroom might have different flooring, it’s generally better to maintain consistency across most of your space. Bathrooms, however, can be an exception due to moisture concerns. It’s wise to choose durable and water-resistant options for these areas.
Evaluate your own home’s needs, but aim for consistency in your flooring across the rest of your living spaces.
Tip#2: Create a Cohesive Home with a Color Palette
If you’re a regular reader of this blog or a listener to my podcast, you might already be familiar with the importance of establishing a color palette in your home. However, it’s worth repeating because it’s crucial.
Establishing a color palette can work wonders in creating a cohesive look for your home. With a color palette I’m talking about using three to four colors consistently throughout your space.
I do have a podcast episode dedicated to color palettes, so if you want to dive deeper into this topic, be sure to check it out.
Now, let’s talk proportions. How much of each color should you incorporate? It’s simple: think 60, 30, 10. Sixty percent should be your neutral color, like what’s on your walls. Thirty percent can be your secondary color, perhaps in your furniture and upholstery. Lastly, reserve 10 percent for your accent color, which can pop up in accessories and art. Feel free to add a fourth color for extra flair—it adds complexity but can elevate your design game. Trust me, you’ve got this!
In my home, I stick to a cozy palette of browns, whites, and blues, which I also apply to my month-to-month rental property, or what we call an MTR.
The key to a cohesive color scheme is to include different shades of each color. This prevents your space from feeling monotonous or flat. For instance, if I used the same navy blue throughout every room, it would become repetitive and distracting. Instead, I mix in various tones of blue—light, medium, and dark. This creates visual interest without overwhelming the senses.
It’s all about balance and avoiding that ‘bought-everything-from-one-display’ look.
Common Mistakes When Creating a Cohesive Home
Let’s tackle a common issue in home decor: mixing different design styles. It’s easy to get carried away with industrial, boho, farmhouse, or coastal vibes, but blending them without a clear plan can lead to trouble, especially for design newbies. It takes finesse to pull off successfully. My advice? Proceed with caution. It’s better to stick to one style to avoid design headaches.
Here’s the golden rule: pick a lane and stay in it. Choose a design style that resonates with you and go all in. By committing to one cohesive look, your space will feel harmonious and showcase your unique taste beautifully.
