Today, we’re talking kitchens! I’ve gone through my own kitchen remodel, so I know the challenges my clients and students face when thinking about taking on this type of project. But, kitchens are the heart of the home and key selling points in real estate so they’re worth investing in. Updated kitchens and bathrooms enhance resale value and appeal. Even a refresh can yield a high return on investment, close to 90%, compared to a full remodel.

Kitchen Remodel or Kitchen Refresh
Let’s dive into the main differences between a kitchen remodel and a refresh. Budget is a key factor.
A kitchen refresh is a less expensive option, focusing on cosmetic changes… On the other hand, a remodel offers a complete transformation. Everything is removed and replaced, possibly altering the layout.
Both approaches can be dramatic, but the choice depends on your budget and the amount of time you’re willing to invest.
Three Big Decisions for Kitchen Updates
When updating your kitchen, there are three major decisions to consider:
1. Are you keeping the same layout? Assess if your current kitchen triangle (sink, stove, fridge) works for you. Changing the layout can significantly increase costs due to potential electrical and plumbing modifications.
2. Are you getting new appliances? Decide early if you’ll replace appliances. Standard sizes like freestanding stoves are easier to change, but built-in units like double-wall ovens might require cabinet adjustments.
3. Are you keeping your current cabinets? If they’re in good condition, consider repainting or refacing. If they’re poor quality, investing in new cabinets might be a better option, even though it adds to the budget.
Common Kitchen Renovation Mistakes to Avoid
1. Not planning. Imagine going on a road trip without any idea where you’re headed—this is similar to updating your kitchen without a clear plan. Proper planning involves knowing your destination and the steps to get there. Without it, you risk expensive mistakes and not get the results that you want.
2. Not balancing form and function. It’s tempting to focus on how a kitchen looks, but it has to work well too. In my own kitchen design, I made sure to maximize storage and prioritize practical usability. This way, the kitchen is both beautiful and functional.
3. Following trends too closely. For instance, the trend of floating shelves can be impractical. While they may look good, they often result in more dusting and clutter. I recommend using open shelving in small doses.
